One Thing Necessary

Distractions were meant to keep you from recognizing and doing the necessary thing.  We see evidence of this statement in Luke 10:38-42.

Martha had welcomed Jesus into her home and immediately upon His arrival, she begins to make preparations as Mary sits at His feet to commune and hear the Lord’s word.  “But Martha was distracted with all her preparations:” (verse 40).

Seeing that she was left to do all the work while her sister did nothing ruffled Mary’s feathers.  She became indignant and walked up to Jesus saying “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone?  Tell her to help me!”  Jesus responded “Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things: but only a few things are necessary, really only one, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.”(verse 4-42)

Many times we may feel like Martha and cry out  “Lord, do You not care! Do you not care that I am doing all the work in my marriage, in the ministry, raising the children, at my job, etc.  I am tired.  I don’t have time to breathe.  I would love to sit but there is so much to do! Laundry has to get done.  The children have their activities.  Bills need to get paid.  I have to call sister watermelon to pray for her healing.  I have conference to set up.  Calls to make. Lord help me!

Like Martha we welcome Jesus in but we allow the distractions and worry of many things to keep us from the one thing that is necessary: sitting at His feet.

In this place there is rest, refreshment, and renewal of mind, body and soul.  It is by first seeking His kingdom and His righteousness that all you need will be added to you.  (Matthew 6:33)  Strength will be added to you.  Peace will be added to you.  Provisions will be added to you.  Strategy will be added to you.  Time will be added to you!  You can’t accomplish anything apart from Him. (John 15:5)

That marriage you are struggling to keep is going to require you to transition from the natural battleground into the spiritual!  You can’t change someone but you surely can pray for change to make its way in them!  The secret place is a powerful place and your posture of kneeling at His feet will cause you to rise.  Not by your might, nor power but by the Spirit! (Zechariah 4:6)

This place of intimacy is the “good part” and once you have chosen this portion, it shall not be taken away from you! However, do not allow condemnation, shame or guilt keep you from entering.  Repent for not choosing the good part and take a bow before Him.  Lean close and listen to the Lord’s word which is life-giving.

Seek balance between your role as a Martha and your role as a Mary.  We are called to be hearers as well as doers. (James 1:22). We serve and we sit!

Blessings...
